  16. <p>    Seems only yesterday that he was a pariah in his homeland,
  17. condemned to internal exile. But since the fateful phone call
  18. came from Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev two years ago
  19. informing Andrei Sakharov that he could return to Moscow, the
  20. Nobel laureate and human-rights activist has assumed an
  21. increasingly public role in Soviet life. Two weeks ago,
  22. Sakharov, 67, led a fact-finding mission to the strife-torn
  23. republics of Armenia and Azerbaijan -- reportedly with
  24. Gorbachev's personal blessing.

  26. <p>    Sakharov's delegation visited Baku, Yerevan and
  27. Stepanakert, the capital of Nagorno-Karabakh, the Armenian
  28. enclave in Azerbaijan that has been at the heart of the ethnic
  29. clashes that have been rocking the Soviet Union since February.
  30. He also stopped in Spitak, the town virtually destroyed in the
  31. Dec. 7 earthquake that the Kremlin now estimates took 25,000
  32. lives.
